Learning Log, Jan 2026

A collection of three stickers about immigration. There is a small skateboarding dog saying 'Borders arent even real, dog. Grow up!' There are two sparkly frogs holding a banner between two flowers, which reads 'Immigrants make our country better'. And there is a riff on the ICEE machine label with a polar bear labeled 'Abolish ICE, keep families together'.
My latest anti-fascist flair is from The Peach Fuzz. The dog is a portrait of me at parties

Here in the U.S., ICE has been carrying on its proud tradition of committing human rights violations, as it continues to terrorize the country it purports to “secure”. So, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about despair and hopelessness vs hopeful, defiant collective action.

Honestly, that looks like plenty of multi-tasking (crying about the soul of humanity while burping the baby). Where I always come back to after the latest crying jag is:

  • You or I alone cannot control what these sentient fart clouds are doing in Minnesota and beyond
  • What we can do is wake up every day and recommit to our values. We can each do something to build a more beautiful world. We can trust that there are many, many other people who share our values. We can seek those people out and build stronger communities with them.

We cannot let these wannabe fascists dictate how we live our lives and how we feel about our neighbors. We can and will build communities truly dedicated to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”—whether they like it or not.

If this resonates with you, you likely know of the same key resources I do, but just in case:

🧶 Crafting

  • Wrote about my 2026 Making Goals
  • Birb Fest 2026
  • Granny Core Baby Quilt
  • I started using Affinity to edit my photos (gave up my Photoshop subscription awhile back) and I’m liking it so far. Thanks Canva acquisition for making it free, you’re welcome for my DAU / WAU engagement!

🎓 Learning

Quite a few things via “Wild Dark Shore” by Charlotte McConaghy (would recommend by the way, for gentler cli-fi):

🧙🏻‍♀️ Side quests

  • Took our daughter to see the lights at the zoo. She passed out after ~20 minutes, but the grownups still had a good time.
  • Trying to lean into the absolute bummer of winter weather we had for much of January
  • Finding new funny noises for my baby to laugh at
  • Going to PT for Mommy Wrist / Mommy Thumb

🌱 Digital gardening

This site

  • Added a resource to an old blog post for a Girl Scout 🥰
  • Added Backlog Readathon to my list of projects. Join us next December!
  • Currently => Now
    • Renamed /currently/ to /now/
    • Moved the “Now” list to that page (in addition to current media)
    • Made some layout changes to current media
    • Mirrored all the “Now” stuff on the home page
    • Added the page to nownownow.com
